Importance of bio fertilizers to increase production capacity of soil

While the use of chemical fertilizers increases the yield, but it is not sustainable, gradually it starts declining and later demands more input of chemical fertilizers, effecting the fertility and structure of soil.

Hence excessive use of chemical fertilizers will cause deteriorate soil quality.

According to experts, it is better to consider the use of chemical fertilizers along with bio-fertilizers, which also improves the soil quality along with appropriate supply of nutrients.

By using bio-fertilizers along with chemical fertilizers, the efficiency of the latter increases and boosts the yield.

Bio-fertilizer is actually livestock manure. The beneficial microbial bacteria present in it capture the nitrogen present in the atmosphere and makes it available to the crop. Similarly it makes insoluble phosphorus present in soil, soluble in water, available to plants.

Thus the need for chemical fertilizers decreases. It has been proved through scientific experiments that 30 to 40 kg of nitrogen per hectare of land is obtained by using organic manure and the yield increases from 10-20 per cent. Bio-fertilizers are complementary to chemical fertilizers and also increase their capacity. The use of biofertilizers called phosphobacteria and mycorrhiza increases the availability of phosphorus in the field by 20- 30 per cent.

Advantages of using organic fertilizers:

  • Organic fertilizers are pocket friendly which reduces the cost of crop production.
  • The use of organic fertilizers increases the availability of nitrogen and soluble phosphorus to crops, decreasing the dependability on chemical fertilizers.
  • Prevents soil erosion and maintains soil structure and improves quality.
  • Crops and soil are not affected by diseases when treated with organic manure.
  • Organic fertilizer increases beneficial micro-organisms in the fields which makes the soil more fertile.
  • Organic manure is environmentally safe.

How to use organic manure

Organic fertilizers are used by seed treatment or root treatment or soil treatment.

Seed treatment:

  • Dissolve 200 grams of bio fertilizer in half litre water.
  • Slowly pour this solution on a pile of 10-15 kg of seed and mix it so that the solution mixes well and spreads evenly on seeds.
  • Dry the treated seeds in shade and sow immediately.

Root treatment

  • Make a solution of 4 kg organic fertilizer in 20-25 liters of water.
  • Submerge the roots of plants enough for one hectare in the solution for 25-30 minutes.
  • Keep the treated plants under shade and transplant as soon as possible.

Soil Treatment:

  • For one hectare of land, 25 packets containing 200 grams of organic manure are required.
  • Take 50 kg soil, 50 kg compost, 5 kg bio fertilizer mix well.
  • Sprinkle the mixture evenly in one hectare area at the time of sowing or 24 hours before sowing.

The use of phosphobacteria with nitrogenous organic fertilizers is very beneficial. There is a different Rhizobium culture for each pulp crop, so buy and use it as per the pulse crop.Never store organic fertilizers under direct sun. Use a clay pitcher for storage purposes.
